Football for Dummies Anyone?

Growing up in a South American country watching soccer, I realize that no matter how much time I lived in the United States, no matter if I read Football for dummies or how many times someone tries to explain the rules to me, I will never understand that game. Why it has to be so confusing? Why are they always falling over each other? What kind of “ball” is that? Yards? I have to say that throughout the years, I have only watched the half time show, the commercials and of course ate wings, chips with salsa or guacamole to keep up with the Super Bowl Sunday party. We have to admit it; the commercials are the best part of the Super Bowl, every year, companies paid millions of dollars for a 30 seconds advertisement. A remarkable one, that people will continue talking about until the next year. My favorite last year was the M&M one, which was an awesome commercial. The brown M&M singing “I’m sexy and I know it”, hilarious! That was a commercial hard to forget but I cannot remember the teams that played last year.

When you have to write about something you have no clue about, Google becomes your best friend. I just went ahead and typed Super Bowl 2013 and a banner show up saying “Sunday, February 3, The NFL Super Bowl 2013”. Now I know when it is, a day to remember. The location for this year Super Bowl is the city of New Orleans- the Mercedez-Benz Superdome; that is where the craziness sporting event is going to take place. The next step is to know what teams are playing. On one hand we have the San Francisco 49ers, and on the other hand there are the Baltimore, Ravens. Again, thanks to Google and Wikipedia, I discover that 49ers have won the Super Bowl 5 times and not since 1994. On the contrary, the Baltimore Ravens have won the Super Bowl only one time. Somehow according to the people I asked and some sport anchors comments, the favorites to win the Super Bowl are the San Francisco 49ers. Nonetheless, I read a curious article on ABC news about a clairvoyant Camel at a zoo in New Jersey that has predicted the Baltimore Ravens as the Super Bowl champions this year. Should we believe the statistics or the clairvoyant Camel? Anyhow, it is really hard to picked a side, since I’m so naïve about the topic. I will try this year to understand the game somehow; I’ll do my best.

According to the countdown kickoff as I finished writing this blog there are 9 days, 17 hours 2 minutes and 30 seconds left for the game to begin! It doesn’t matter if you are not an expert, just enjoy the Super Bowl party you are going, enjoy the company, the music, the food and the commercials, after all, all you are going to hear about the following day is the Super Bowl, be ready!

I live in Mount Dora

Are you nuts? Do you drive all the way to UCF? Where is that? You should move, seriously! That is the kind of response I get when these words come out of my mouth: I live in Mount Dora. My friends think I am delusional because I live according to them, so far away. I know the driving is awful but I have to admit it, I have learned to love this beautiful town. I fell in love with the view, the trees, the lake, the lighthouse, the sunset, the sunrise, the peacefulness, the sound of the birds, the stars, the cows, the alligators, the bears, the raccoons, the library, the coffee shop, Christmas at the park, the craft fair, the art fest, high school, the tennis courts and many other things that come to my mind when I think of Mount Dora.

I have been living in this town for the past ten years. Ever since I move to the United States from Lima, Peru with my family. This place has become my second home and I really enjoy living here. It is quiet, peaceful and relaxing. It is still, compare to Orlando, a safe place to live. Where you can leave your car door unlock and nothing will get stolen a place where you can still trust your neighbor and where taking a walk downtown at night it is not dangerous.

Many people believe, this is a boring town, it could be sometimes after a while I have to say, but if you are planning on visiting here for the weekend, your experience will be unforgettable. Let the journey began with only a short forty-minute drive north of Orlando that you won’t regret. I am surprise that many native Floridians (Orlando based) have no clue where this beautiful town is located. Do not get me wrong; I did not know anything about it before I moved here. My first experience with Florida was a family vacation to Disney-Orlando and this place did not even cross my mind.  Now I know that we are located in the heart of Lake County, Florida, that lakes, hills and trees surround us. That a store sells a I climb Mount Dora t-shirt, that lady’s with red hats and purple outfit walk the streets of the town every Wednesday afternoon and you can watch a movie at the park.

There are a million things to do in Florida besides, theme parks. It is time to explore new places, create memories and enjoy stress free adventures without spending too much money, taking an airplane or driving more than two hours to get there. Experience the small town atmosphere and escape from the hustle that living in the city means. Mount Dora is a great destination, let me be your guide and show you the different activities that we have to offer and what truly means to be a local here. I will share my experiences throughout the years, the best places to eat, my top 5 activities to do and the most important, I will make you fall in love with the wonders of Mount Dora!
